A new song. A tour. A new tour EP. And the future.

Pattern Is Movement, at work on a new album, release “Light of the World” as a gift — and clue — for fans. Heading out on the road with Via Audio this month, they’ll be offering a limited edition EP featuring two new tracks, covers, and more.

The road blazed by Pattern Is Movement’s album All Together is one that Andrew Thiboldeaux and Chris Ward paved by hand. Two years of near-constant performing, alongside the likes of St. Vincent, Shudder to Think, and The Roots, brought a longtime musical project, based in childhood friendship between the two Philadelphia natives, into glowing public light. A slice of our world was mesmerized by the triumphant and chanting single “Right Away.” Those who picked up the record, packaged with reproductions of ten antique photos (one for each song), fell lovingly into the shameless groove of “Jenny Ono.” A song like “Peach Trees” rang through shuffled playlists, swinging like an anthem for everyday life.
What Pitchfork described as “an accessible album that nonetheless sounds unlike anything any other band is doing” was merely the preamble for the two-man explosion that Pattern Is Movement became on stage. The road became the laboratory (and the audience the test subjects) as Andrew and Chris discovered new connections to their respective instruments. With a side-by-side setup of drums (Chris) and piano/synth/bass/mic/other devices (Andrew), Pattern Is Movement became defined by power, even with the lightest touch. In the space cultivated by this tension, experimental gems like their Beyonce and D’Angelo covers were born. A gospel vocabulary, ingrained in both Chris and Andrew after parallel childhoods in the evangelical Christian world and in mutual love for hip hop and R&B, began having its influence on the language of Pattern Is Movement.
Enter “Light of the World.” History culminates in the current moment, and Pattern Is Movement, in the throes of creating their new album, captured this song along the way. Soon available as a digital single, “Light of the World” and more unreleased tracks (including a David Bowie cover!) will only be available at the merch table as part of a limited tour-only EP release on Pattern Is Movement’s upcoming tour with Via Audio.
